Iceland has announced a significant change to its opening hours ahead of the Christmas period.

The major supermarket will be closed on Boxing Day this year as it joins other major retailers who have opted to give staff time off over the busy period in recent years.

Here's when the major retailer will be open over the Christmas period and when your last chance will be to pick up your shopping ahead of the big day.

The Managing Director of Iceland, Richard Walker confirmed that around 500 branches as well as over 150 Food Warehouse stores in the UK would be closed on December 26.

Mr Walker announced on Twitter: "We’ll be closing all our Iceland and Food Warehouse stores on Boxing Day, to give our colleagues a well-earned rest with their friends & families."

This is not the first time that Iceland has closed to observe a bank holiday this year after the retailer shut its stores as a mark of respect on the day of the Queen's funeral on September 19.

Iceland's announcement comes as both Home Bargains and Aldi revealed that they will also be closed on Boxing Day this year.

Last year several major retailers including M&S, Pets At Home, Morrisons and Wilko closed all of their stores on the bank holiday.

They were joined by Sainsbury's, Poundland and The Entertainer in 2021 and it is expected that the High Street chains will be following suit again this year.
