THE Roma community and Govanhill residents celebrated International Roma Day today with a march through the streets and an address from Nicola Sturgeon.

Supporters gathered in Govanhill Park at 11am for the annual event, which showcases Romani culture, where the First Minister launched the celebrations with a speech.

The crowd then marched to Queen's Park before enjoying an afternoon of music, dancing and films.

Many of those taking part were dressed in traditional clothing while several held signs with messages such as "defend Roma rights" and "Roma are welcome here".

Speaking ahead of the event Nicola Sturgeon, who is MSP for Glasgow Southside, said: "Govanhill is such a great part of my constituency and I see first hand what a wonderfully welcoming and culturally diverse neighbourhood it is.

"What is particularly impressive, is the fact that young people have played a major role in organising this event.

"It reinforces my belief that this community will have a positive impact on successive generations, not just in Govanhill but on the Scotland of the future.

"I would like to thank all the Roma community and local organisations for organising such a vibrant and enjoyable day."
