A CHEF has spoken about his fears for the hospitality industry as ‘crippling’ increases are set to make dining out unaffordable.

Andy Neilson, who is head chef at Bloc+ in the city centre, has seen significant rises in supply costs for his business in recent weeks.

He worries that the food and drink industry may not recover, especially after the tumultuous two years that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought.

Andy said: “The hospitality industry is experiencing unprecedented times yet again.

“Just as we’re getting back to some form of normality post-covid, we have been hit with potentially crippling supplier price increases that could see eating out becoming an unaffordable luxury.

“At Bloc+, we have seen price increases across the board - from nationwide dry goods suppliers right down to our local bakers and butchers.”

Andy’s worries come as the hospitality industry faces major rises, including a 19% increase in labour costs, and 17% and 14% rises in food and drink prices respectively.

The team at Bloc+ have not only been affected by the costs of goods, but also the issue of sourcing imported goods, which has forced them to have to put up some of their prices.

Andy said: “In the last few weeks, the costs of frying oil and chicken has hit a ridiculous high. It is also becoming increasingly difficult to source imported goods on a commercial scale.

“We pride ourselves on our affordable prices in Bloc+, but unfortunately, we have had to increase our prices slightly this year on some of our menu items.”

Andy is hoping that by trying to keep his menu reasonably priced, people will still be able to enjoy eating out, and not have to tighten the purse strings too much.

He added: “We run a different deal every weekday, so if you’re feeling the pinch, you can still dine with us for only a couple of quid.

“Our most popular deal is on a Wednesday when you can get steak and chips for only £5.

“You would struggle to purchase the ingredients from your local shop for that price these days, so it’s always a hit with our customers.”

Despite concerning increases, and the changes he has had to implement due to supply costs, Andy has not seen a significant drop in customer numbers.

He is thankful to his regular customers for keeping him going during such tough times and hopes that Bloc+ can be there for its customers too with whatever they need.

He said: “We are thankful to each and every customer that comes through the door, whether it be for a full meal, a pint or just a bowl of chips.

 “Times are extremely hard for everyone at the moment, so we truly appreciate the continued custom from our loyal clientele.”
