A WOMAN has been left shocked after a metal spire fell from a roof and impaled a car just a couple of feet from where she stood.

Melissa Kavanagh was walking her dog, Ronnie, on Wilton Street in the city's West End when the incident occurred at around 4pm on Monday.

Melissa said the event could have been "catastrophic" and reminded her of something out of Final Destination.

The 32-year-old said: "It’s just crazy, I was walking with my dog and I heard a bang so I looked up and all the seagulls were going crazy.

"As I looked up to where the turret is on the corner I noticed a stake, like this giant 4ft metal bar was just falling down from the sky.

"Within seconds it impaled that car.

"I was a couple of feet away and I had been stood where it would have fallen through so it was literally seconds difference."

Laughing, she added: "I feel very lucky, I should probably go buy a scratchcard."

Melissa says as a result of the incident she has now become warier of the decorative features on buildings when she's out walking.

She said: "I’ve just become more aware when I’ve been walking around the West End and so many of these beautiful buildings have got a lot of that old ironwork on the top so I am a bit nervous now to see any of that."

She added: "I’m glad we left the house at that time because if I hadn’t been with Ronnie I don’t know if I’d have been a few seconds quicker and that could have been game over."

Glasgow Times:

Melissa was able to speak to one of the building's residents to explain what happened and also left a note on the car for the owner.

She said: "If someone came back I’d hate for them to think someone had done it on purpose or what had happened.

"So I left a note in case they need to make an insurance claim or anything."

It's currently unclear what caused the spire to fall though there was some wind on Monday afternoon.

A Glasgow City Council spokesperson said: "Whilst there are many such decorative features on tenements throughout the city, thankfully incidents such as this are very rare.

"As ever, it is important to be aware that is the responsibility of property owners to maintain the fabric of their buildings."
