THE newly restored gates of a Govan park have been defaced by graffiti again, in what is said to be the fourth episode of vandalism in just four weeks.

Scrawls have been spraypainted on the pillars at the entrance gates of Elder Park, after the local community recently celebrated their restoration.

Graffiti appeared on nearby signs and noticeboards too.

Glasgow MSP Paul Sweeney took to Twitter on Saturday evening to condemn the anti-social behaviour, saying this was the fourth time the area had been targeted in the past month.

Despite the council’s efforts to remove the graffiti, it appears the culprits return to scribble on the same surfaces after they’ve been scrubbed up.

A new graffiti on the park’s noticeboard reads: “I’ll keep spraypainting.”

Mr Sweeney wrote: “It's frustrating that for the fourth time in as many weeks, the newly restored gates at Govan's Elder Park have been defaced with graffiti, this time with a defiant message on the park's noticeboard.

“There's also a trail of tags through central Govan. Reported to @MyGlasgowCC again.”

Local labour candidate Ruth Hall tweeted: “It was only a couple of months ago the community celebrated their hard work in getting the beautiful gates, lamps and stonework refurbished at Elder Park.

“So disappointed to see it being continually vandalised.”

Glasgow City Council said its graffiti removal team will deal with the scrawls again as soon as possible and encouraged people to report this type of incident to the police.

A spokeswoman said: “It is really sad to see that new graffiti appears just as the last lot has been cleaned off by our graffiti removal team.

“If this fresh graffiti has been reported via the MyGlasgowCC app, the team will deal with it again in the coming days.

“We would urge anyone who witnesses this type of vandalism being carried out to report it to the police immediately and continue to report it via the MyGlasgowCC app, for us to take action.”
