A MAJOR 999 rescue operation was launched after a man entered Glasgow’s River Clyde.

Fire crews using their specialist water boats rescued the man in the river near to the Bells Bridge on Wednesday night at around 7.35pm.

He was then assessed by the Scottish Ambulance Service.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were made aware of a man having entered the River Clyde near Bell’s Bridge in Glasgow around 7.35pm on Wednesday, June 1.

“He has been recovered with the assistance of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and passed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service.”

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were requested at 7.38pm on Wednesday, June 1, to assist our emergency service partners at the River Clyde, Glasgow.

"Operations Control mobilised two fire engines and two water rescue teams to the city's Bells Bridge, where firefighters assisted their partners before leaving the scene."

A spokesperson for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: “We received a call at 7.39pm on June 1, 2022 to attend an incident on the River Clyde. Five resources, including our Special Operations Response Team (SORT) and Trauma Team, were sent to the scene.

"The patient was transported to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.”
