A SEARCH is underway for the driver of a car that crashed and burst into flames in the city's East End.

Cops were called to Gallowgate shortly after midnight following reports of a one-vehicle crash near St Mungo's Academy.

Following the crash, it is understood the car caught fire and the road was closed for several hours. 

It has since reopened.

Officers say an investigation into the crash is now underway and they are trying to trace the driver of the car.

As well as viewing CCTV footage from the area, police are now appealing for witnesses and anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting incident number 0023 of June 16.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Officers were called to a report of a one-vehicle crash in Gallowgate, Glasgow at around 12.10am on Thursday, June 16, 2022.

"Emergency services attended and the road was closed while investigations were carried out.

"Enquiries are ongoing to trace the driver and the road has since re-opened.

"Officers are reviewing CCTV footage and are requesting any further witnesses, or anyone with dashcam footage, to contact police on 101, quoting incident number 0023 from Thursday, June 16, 2022."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 0.08 am on Thursday, June 16 to reports of a single-vehicle road traffic collision involving a car on the Gallowgate, Glasgow. 

"Operations control immediately mobilised two appliances and firefighters extinguished the fire which had taken hold of the vehicle. 

"There were no reports of any casualties.

"Crews left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe."
