An East End neighbourhood is undergoing a 'week of action' to tackle issues including fly-tipping, graffiti and litter.

A number of Clean Glasgow teams, made up of city council staff, began work within the Craigend community today in a bid to spruce up its streets.

The initiative is the latest step in a rolling programme of action to help communities across the city look their best in partnership with members of the public.

Over the course of this week, streetlights in Craigend will be checked with repairs carried out as needed, streets will be swept, green spaces will be trimmed and weeds removed.

Undercover officers will also patrol the streets to keep an eye out for fly-tippers or dog owners who fail to clean up after their pets.

Local residents are invited to roll up their sleeves and get involved with the action too with a community litter pick taking place this Wednesday from 10:30 am to 1 pm.

The Clean Glasgow team will be at hand to provide litter picking equipment for the event which will start from the Craigend shops.

Councillor Ruari Kelly, Glasgow’s Convener for Neighbourhood Services and Assets, said: “I am delighted to be kicking off this week of action in Craigend and am confident that residents will see immediate improvements from this concentration of resources in their community.

“The area has fantastic green spaces like Cardowan Moss, which is a haven for wildlife and part of the Seven Lochs Wetland Park.

"It is a popular community asset enjoyed by local people as well as attracting visitors from farther afield and maintaining these open spaces and addressing fly-tipping in our neighbourhoods is something residents have highlighted as priorities.

“I look forward to rolling out the weeks of action and deep cleans across the city.”

Glasgow City Council has advised that some road closures may be needed to enable cleaning work and that some residents may be asked to temporarily move their cars.
