CUSTOMERS have been left 'heartbroken' after a popular city centre restaurant announced its sudden closure on social media.

Bosses at Absurd Bird, which is best known for its fried chicken and country music inspired decor, posted a video on TikTok saying that the eatery has "officially" closed its doors.

They did not give a reason for the closure of the restaurant on Nelson Mandela Place, but said it was "outwith our control" and apologised to those who had bookings.

The video read: "With a heavy heart we have officially closed our doors.

"I would like to apologise to anyone with a booking that we can no longer fulfill, this decision was unfortunately outwith our control.

"Thank you to everyone who has joined us over the last four years for humongous chicken burgers & yummy cocktails, we have loved every minute."

The post continued: "To my fabulous team... I will miss every single one of you and will be forever grateful for the memories, whatever life brings you next I know each and every one of you will smash it."

Disappointed customers flooded the comment section to say they were "gutted" to hear about the restaurant's closure.

One user wrote: "Very saddened to hear this.

"My fiance and I spent a night having cocktails in there to celebrate our engagement not too long ago, great place."

Another said: "You are kidding.

"I'm so sorry to hear that.

"Whenever I visited the food was fab and the service was excellent.

"I wish you the best of luck."

A third person added: "This is broken my heart."

A post shared on the Absurd Bird UK Instagram account announced the company's London, Leeds and Exeter restaurants are also closing but did not say why.

The post said: "Our London, Exeter, Leeds and Glasgow restaurants will be closed due to unforeseen circumstances, however you can still order as usual through our virtual restaurants on Uber Eats and Just Eats at our other locations across the UK."

Absurd Bird has been contacted for comment.
