A man is demanding that the speed limit is lowered on what he says is an "extremely dangerous" road where his dog sadly died.

Donald Wilson, 55, walked his companion Bruno every morning for the past eight years near Gartloch Road, where he spends much of his free time recording wildlife.

The road lies at the border of Glasgow and North Lanarkshire, north of Easterhouse.

Tragically, the pet was knocked down on the road, at the West Cottages, on Monday.

He said: "It’s been one of the toughest days of my life.

"It was no one’s fault. The lady that hit him wasn’t driving too fast but if it was a 30mph limit, then maybe his injuries wouldn’t have been so bad.

“I always feared it will take a casualty for there to be change but I never thought it would be my own dog.

"He was an amazing loving dog and touched everyone who met him in a happy positive way."

Prior to the incident, the ambulance worker was already campaigning to make the road safer, after he claimed over a dozen vehicles were involved in accidents in the past year due to the current speed limit.

Now, after the loss of his short-haired Collie, he is even more determined to induce change.

The Tannochside resident said: “I just tagged it as the most dangerous road in Glasgow. The amount of incidents that happen is incredible.

“People just drive past you as if you don’t exist.

“Due to the speeds that people drive, they are unaware of the dangers of the road. For example, there are deers. In the last eight years, there have been about 20 deer kills.

“There are also trees on tight bends, hidden junctions, old workers’ cottages. It’s crazy.

“I can see how many accidents happen. I believe in 2020-2021, there were around 15 accidents on the road."

Most recently, as we have previously reported, a 17-year-old teenage boy was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary after a collision between two cars on Gartloch Road.

This incident took place around 8am on Friday, June 17.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We are still appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.”

Margaret Robertson, 48, who lives on Gartloch Road, agrees that the speeding is cause for concern.

Explaining that she doesn't see police officers doing checks, she suggested 'slow down' signage and a reduction of the speed limit in the area.

She said: "Some cars follow the speed limit but most of them go by much faster.

"I am about to get a big fence put over my garden. I wouldn't have my grandson over just now in case he got out on the road, it's too busy.

"My neighbour's dog got killed here about two years ago too."

Currently, the speed limit on the road changes frequently and goes up to 60mph at some stretches.

Mr Wilson also said the increasing number of cars using the road creates further difficulties.

He added: “In the last eight years, that road has become busier and busier because of a great deal of new developments in the area.

“The Gartloch Hospital has been built, various developments and housing schemes are all around. Basically, there is more traffic.

“Also, that road has been used as a rat-run because people can go up there and connect to the M8.

“There is also the Glasgow Fort, so people heading there also use the road. There has been a massive increase in the volume of traffic.

“The road is extremely dangerous. Last winter when it snowed, two cars came off the road.

“It’s just getting worse."

A spokesperson from Glasgow City Council said: "We have reduced the speed limit on a stretch of Gartloch Road near housing to 40mph with support from Police Scotland and are currently consulting them about the possibility of making the entire stretch of Gartloch Road (within Glasgow) a 40mph zone.”

A spokesperson from North Lanarkshire Council said: "We are not aware of any particular issues on the section of the road in North Lanarkshire."

Police Scotland did not provide a comment.
