A further two rose bushes were taken from a Govan community garden, despite a public plea from volunteers.

Last month, the Glasgow Times reported that 25 plants has been stolen from the garden in Elder Park in the space of a year and local groups were contemplating installing security cameras to combat the issue.

Since then, volunteers have reported that further two rose bushes were taken from their beds, despite a growing number of watchful eyes in the area.

The flowers, which cost £11 each, have so far been dug out with a gaping hole left behind, but this time volunteers found a different scene.

Katharine McNab, committee member and volunteer at Friends of Elder Park, who planted and replaced the roses, said: "This time, instead of leaving a hole, they actually filled them in.

"But we could see where they had been taken from because of the footprints and you could tell from the surface."

The thefts began last year and are a growing concern for the charity, due to the financial strain and its demoralising effect.

Ms McNab added: "We're scunnered. We're annoyed at the fact that it keeps happening and there is nothing we can do to stop it.

"The only thing we can do is make people aware and keep an eye out in the rose garden.

"But obviously, we can't watch it all day, and clearly, these people are taking the opportunity probably later at night, to steal them."

The group, which is yet to report the incidents to police, is encouraging local residents to stay vigilant as they work to combat the thefts.
