A COMMUNITY group has branded the River Clyde 'boggin' as condoms were spotted among the sewers.

Images shared by River Clyde Environment Group show rubbish clumped together and blocking part of a gate at the river.

Multiple condoms are also seen splayed on the banks of the river, at Downiebrae Road in Rutherglen.

Glasgow Times:

The group encourages locals to report activities to the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and they have urged people to take care with flushing certain items down the toilet.

A member of the group wrote: "Please don't flush condoms, sanitary products and wet wipes down the toilet.

"Scotland's sewers are struggling as it is."

Glasgow Times:

A spokesperson from the SEPA said: "SEPA has not received any reports from members of the public concerned about pollution of the River Clyde from the outfall at this location, so we are grateful to the Glasgow Times for bringing this to our attention.

"Initial enquiries suggest this could be a discharge from a Combined Sewer Outfall (CSO) as a result of heavy rain over the weekend.

"CSOs are an integral part of most sewer networks, ensuring that sewers do not back up and flood homes, streets and sewage works during bad weather. It is therefore normal for them to spill during heavy rainfall.

"However, the spill should be screened, and we have contacted Scottish Water to investigate this further and ensure they arrange a clean-up of the area.

“We continue to encourage anyone who is concerned about potential pollution to contact SEPA as soon as possible so we can investigate. People can report 24 hours a day, seven days a week online at www.sepa.org.uk/report or by calling the SEPA Pollution Hotline on 0800 80 70 60.”
