INMATES at a Glasgow prison have voted to name a hall in a new facility after the Loch Ness Monster.

A new jail, HMP Glasgow, is set to replace Barlinnie, which has been long affected by overcrowding.

Now, Barlinnie prisoners have been given the opportunity to get creative by suggesting new names for a hall in the new prison.

Jail insiders told The Scottish Sun that Nessie was the top choice.

An anonymous source said: “With prizes up for grabs, it seems to have captured the imagination.

"Apparently the winners will get a bag of sweets, which isn’t to be sniffed at in a place like Barlinnie.

“The rumour is Nessie’s one of the favourites.

"But some prisoners are winding up the bosses by putting names of drugs in.”

Leaflets were reportedly passed under cell doors last week as Glasgow City Council approved plans for the prison to be built in Provanmill.

The Scottish Prison Service (SPS) has awarded Kier the preconstruction services contract to deliver the new prison, which is set to replace Victorian-era HMP Barlinnie, in 2026.

The Scottish Prison Service told The Scottish Sun: “SPS is undertaking wide-scale engagement as part of the HMP Glasgow project, which includes those currently in our care.”

We previously reported Barlinnie was running at an occupancy rate significantly over its capacity as of 2019.

Statistics released by the Scottish Government indicated that the 987-capacity Glasgow prison had held more than it is designed to hold in each month of 2019.
