A MAN who smashed his friend's false teeth and stole her mobile phone was jailed on Friday for 16 months.

John Fanning, 25, turned on Lorraine Blair, 57, at her home in Glasgow's Milton on January 25, 2022.

Fanning claimed he was tired before lashing out at Miss Blair and stamping on her dentures.

He then took her phone to stop her contacting the police.

Days later, he locked Miss Blair in her home as a delay tactic when she threatened to dial 999.

Fanning pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to assault and robbery as well as abduction.

The court heard the friends of four years stayed with each other on a number of occasions.

The pair were in the living room during the early hours of the morning when Fanning "became aggressive."

Fanning told Miss Blair that he was tired and going to take her phone.

She refused to hand it over before being told: "What are you going to do about it?"

Prosecutor Carrie Stevens said: "Fanning struck her on the forehead with his head causing her false teeth to fall out.

"Fanning then stamped on the false teeth - breaking them - before taking the phone and making off."

The victim later contacted the police from a filling station.

Six days later the pair ran into each other in the street where Fanning requested his belongings.

They went back to Miss Blair's house where he retrieved his items from a cupboard.

Ms Stevens said: "Fanning locked the door and left with the only key."

Miss Blair went to the window where she altered a neighbour who came to her aid.

A 999 call was made and Fanning was traced and arrested.

Marco Buonaccorsi, defending, told the court: "The reason for taking her phone was to stop her phoning the police as he had a live warrant.

"He has asked me to express his regret.

"He said when he left with the key he knew Miss Blair's daughter had a key.

"It was a delay tactic but he accepts detaining her against her will."

Sheriff Iain Fleming told Fanning that he had no choice but to impose custody.

He added: "This was a robbery of a 57-year-old woman and there is a public expectation that the court deals with matters such as this in a serious way."
