A POPULAR activity game that gets the whole community involved is planning to get people moving when it returns.

Beat the Street combines exercise with competition and allows participants of all ages to win points and prizes while keeping active.

After successful stints in Glasgow, East Renfrewshire and South Lanarkshire, the game is coming to Paisley for the first time and will run from August 31 to October 12.

Councillor Michelle Campbell, Convener for the Economy and Regeneration Policy Board at Renfrewshire Council, said: “Beat the Street has been played several times around the area, but this is the first time it’s been played in Paisley!

“We’re delighted to have been able to bring the competition to the town and look forward to seeing how far everyone can walk, cycle, and wheel in the six-week game."

To take part in the free game, participants must collect a card from one of the various distribution points across the town, which can be found here.

Players will hover their cards over one of 69 'Beat Boxes' which will be placed on lampposts in the area to start their journey.

They then must walk, cycle or wheel to the next one to score points.

School children will be provided with cards and maps via their school.

Players can join a team with their school, workplace or charity and the further they walk, cycle or wheel, the more points they will win for their team.

The teams will be in with a chance of winning vouchers for books and sports equipment at the end of the six-week game.

Cllr Campbell added: “Previous games nearby have shown that Beat the Street is a great way of getting children, families and our communities active.

"Not only that, but the game enables the community to lower its carbon footprint and also brings the community together which in turn improves wellbeing, increases feelings of safety and reduces isolation.”

The game was created by Dr William Bird MBE to help people become more active and incorporate healthy habits, as well as improve air pollution, increasing active travel and reducing congestion.
