As school pupils across Scotland received their results this morning the Glasgow Caledonian University clearing hotline centre was a flurry of activity.

Phones rang, records were checked and support was offered from GCU staff with a goal of matching prospective students who had not achieved their desired grades to an alternative course.

It’s not long since Leeann Jancorda, a current student at GCU, was on the other end of a call to the hotline.

She said: “I was studying at a different uni and by the end of first year realised that I wasn’t enjoying my course.

“I decided to try phoning the clearing hotline to find out what my options were.

“The staff were so helpful and told me exactly what I would be able to do.

“I spoke to around four different people to make sure that I was on the right track.”

After witnessing the clearing support team at work this morning, Leeann continued: “It’s really interesting to see what’s happening today.

“I assumed I had been talking to one person on their own in an office, but it's so nice to see so many passionate people here wanting to do a good thing.

“I think people have the idea that clearing is something you do if you’ve failed.

“I would tell them not to be scared and to give it a go.

“I’m so grateful that I did.”

The clearing process allows students like Leeann to re-evaluate their academic choices and find out what the best options are for them with the grades they have achieved.

Alongside more than 25 volunteer members of staff at the centre today was Stephanie Pitticas, the director of admissions and recruitment at GCU.

She said: “Our main message today is one of reassurance.

“Don’t be despondent, keep calm and do your homework on what’s best for you.

“Clearing does go on until the end of August and we answer thousands of enquiries across a number of different platforms.

“We’re here to help and we would encourage anyone, whether that’s a student, parent or guardian to pick up the phone.”
