THE PROVOST for North Lanarkshire Council has resigned today.

Councillor Agnes Magowan tendered her resignation to the chief executive of the council after being unable to fulfil the duties required of her.

This is due to a family member dealing with a worsening illness.

Councillor Magowan said: “It is with a very heavy heart that I have been compelled to write to the chief executive today to tender my resignation.

"It was such a huge honour to be elected Provost and to represent all the people of North Lanarkshire.

"The welcome I have had from individuals and groups across the area as I have helped them celebrate their achievements has been fantastic.

“However, I am unable to dedicate the time required to these duties while also fulfilling my responsibilities to my family in very difficult circumstances.

“Whoever succeeds me will be privileged to carry out the role and I wish my successor the very best.”

Councillor Magowan's duties will be carried out by Depute Provost, Councillor Anne Thomas until a new Provost is elected in a meeting to be arranged as soon as possible.
