STRIKES across various sectors are continuing this summer, with more planned for August.

Rail is one of these, with unions Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) and Aslef announcing industrial action this month, starting this weekend.

Union members from Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry and LNER will walk out on Saturday, August 13, and then on Thursday, August 18, and Saturday, August 20, with disruptions to service to and from Glasgow.

LNER said: “There is planned industrial action on Saturday, August 13, Thursday, August 18, and Saturday, August 20.

“There will be an impact to our timetable on the above dates and on days either side of each strike date.

“When you're travelling on our trains between Friday 12 and Sunday 14 August and Wednesday 17 and Sunday 21 August, some services may be different, including timetables and catering onboard.”

Avanti West Coast is advising customers “not to travel during the next strike action as no services will be operating across any of its routes”.

Strike action on Saturday 13 August will mean the intercity operator will be “unable to operate any of its services along its west coast route for the whole day”.

Further strike action by the RMT and TSSA is planned for August 18 and 20, which will impact Avanti West Coast services.

There will be also no CrossCountry services running to and from the city on Saturday, August 13.

The company said: “If you have a ticket booked for Saturday, August 13, your ticket will be valid for travel on Friday, August 12, or up to and including Tuesday, August 16, without having to amend your ticket.

“Further dates for industrial action have been announced for Thursday 18, and Saturday 20 August, please continue to check our website for updates.”

ScotRail has reminded passengers that services aren't directly affected by the Aslef strike on August 13.

“However,” the company said, “our services may be busier than normal due to customers from other train operators travelling on our services instead”.

Still, 40,000 RMT members are expected to walk out on August 18 and 20 and travellers, with Network Rail Scotland staff taking part.

This means most journeys will be cancelled in Scotland, including ScotRail services.

In a statement, ScotRail said: "RMT announced further national strike action across the Great Britain railway network in a separate dispute with Network Rail and other train operating companies.

"This means Network Rail members of the RMT will be striking on 18 and 20 August.

"While this is a separate dispute, the planned strikes on those days will cause disruption to ScotRail services, as Network Rail Scotland signallers and maintenance staff, who are in safety-critical roles, will be on strike.

"At the moment, we're working through our timetable plans for the strike days and what this means for ScotRail services."

It's important to note that Unite has suspended industrial action on Glasgow's subway network has been called off.

Industrial action which was due to take place on August 6,9, 13 and 27 has been suspended after it was criticised for "cynically" timing the strikes during Rangers games.
