A TWO DOORS Down star has left the cast as filming commences for the new series.

Doon Mackichan, who plays Cathy in the Glasgow sitcom, will not return for the sixth series and Christmas special, Chortle reports.

Cathy has been written out of the show and it will be revealed that she has left her husband Colin, played by Only an Excuse? star Jonathan Watson.

Producers at BBC Studios Comedy said: "It has been absolutely fantastic to have Doon in the show.

"She’ll always be part of the Two Doors Down family and we wish her all the best.

"Her character Cathy has been a great source of horror, entertainment and laughs for millions of viewers over the years.

"We await news of what will become of poor Colin. What will he do with all the empties? And who’ll microwave his dinner for him?"

The rest of the ensemble cast will return to Latimer Crescent, with Arabella Weir and Alex Norton playing Beth and Eric, their son Ian (Jamie Quinn), his fiance Gordon (Kieran Hodgson) as well as fan favourites Christine (Elaine C Smith), Michelle (Joy McAvoy) and Alan (Graeme 'Grado' Stevely).

Siobhan Redmond will also be joining the cast, but her role has not yet been revealed.

Steven Canny, the executive producer for BBC Studios Comedy, said: ’It’s such a pleasure and privilege to be back making Two Doors Down.

‘It’s a phenomenal crew, a brilliantly funny cast and the beautifully crafted scripts are a constant source of surprise and delight sprinkled with cruelty.

"I’m really looking forward to the audience seeing the new ways we’ve found to torment poor Beth and Eric."

Commissioning editor Seb Barwell added that the show ‘continues to delight audiences with its miniature masterpieces of contained comedy’

The episodes will air on BBC Two and iPlayer later this year and are currently being filmed on location and at BBC Scotland’s Dumbarton Studios.

For fans who cannot wait to get their fix, the first five series are available on BBC iPlayer.
