A Glasgow landlord who was jailed for possessing indecent images of children has been struck off the register.

The city’s licensing committee heard how Paul Chalmers had been convicted of three offences last year. He failed to tell the council about his convictions as he was imprisoned.

Councillors decided to remove him from the register of private landlords after ruling he no longer remained a “fit and proper” person to rent property in the city.

A council official told the committee that Police Scotland had informed the council that Mr Chalmers had been charged and convicted.

He said: “In October 2021, the applicant was convicted of three offences. These offences related to indecent images of children.”

Cllr Alex Wilson, the licensing committee chairman, asked Mr Chalmers why he had not informed the council’s landlord registration unit about his conviction.

“Because I was remanded in custody,” Mr Chalmers said, adding: “I was convicted in October last year and only released last month.”

He said he had updated the registration unit since he was released. “I am very ashamed and remorseful,” he added.

Mr Chalmers informed the committee that he had been a joint landlord for the Glasgow property with his wife and they had been letting it for 15 years.

Since his conviction, the couple have separated and they are attempting to sell the property, he added. “I don’t intend to be a landlord after it’s sold,” he said.

The property has been managed by a letting agent and is currently occupied by a tenant.

Mr Chalmers said: “There is a tenant in the property, that’s the issue just now.  “We’re trying to be as helpful as possible to the tenant, we’re trying to sell in situ.”
