A RIVER City producer has revealed a big change is coming for a major character.

Martin McCardie appeared in the popular Glasgow soap before joining as an executive producer in 2015.

And now has told how some changes are going to be made to the fictional shipbuilding district Shieldinch in order to be more environmentally friendly and this involves "an evolution" of Bob O'Hara, played by Stephen Purdon.

The 59-year-old revealed his plans for Montego Motors to the Scottish Sun: "I would scrap the garage as it currently is because it's old-fashioned.

"We're doing an evolution of Stephen Purdon's character Bob O'Hara and his journey towards going green.

"Bob's got to look at what a mechanic is going to be doing in 20 years' time.

"One of the other characters ends up in another garage that's much more ahead of the game in terms of what's green.

"We're also looking at other areas - Maggie is about to start her own business and we were trying to get her an electric van.

"But what we found is you can get electric cars but not electric vans yet, so that's now become part of the story."

It comes as the show prepares to celebrate its 20 years on screen with a unique anniversary show starring Purdon, the only original cast member.

Purdon said: "I’m so humbled this special River City anniversary episode is centred around Bob. He’s been a part of the show and my life for two decades now so it feels like the perfect scenario.

"The anniversary episode is full of twists and turns and Bob goes through a lot, with his best mate Angus by his side.

"At the heart of it all, it’s about family which is so important to Bob and, for me, this show has become my family over the years."
