SWG3 has switched on an innovative new heating system that is powered by visitors’ body heat.
After three years of development, last night saw the arts centre and event space put the “radical” system to the test with guests invited to take part in a special group performance of the Slosh.

Andrew Fleming-Brown, MD of SWG3, said: “We’re thrilled that after three years of planning, consultation and construction, we are able to switch on the first BODYHEAT system.
“As well as being a huge step towards our goal of becoming net zero and will hopefully influence others from our industry and beyond to follow suit, working together to tackle climate change.”
From now on body heat from anyone who attends the Finnieston spot for gigs, exhibitions or workshops will travel through a network of pipes and pumps before being captured in 12 boreholes 200 metres underground.
The recycled heat will then be used to heat or cool a number of spaces across the site as needed.
The project is part of SWG3’s ambitious “sustainability-focused masterplan” which could see the space become a net zero venue in the coming years.

Councillor Angus Millar, convener for Climate and the Glasgow Green Deal at Glasgow City Council, said: “This is a fantastic scheme, where people really are making Glasgow greener – while having a great time.
“This innovative approach to reducing emissions and energy use at SWG3 is a great example of how we can all play our part in Glasgow becoming a Net Zero city.”
