Hundreds gathered in St Enoch Square this afternoon to show solidarity for Iranian protesters after the death of Mahsa Amini.

Iran has seen weeks of unrest following the burial of Amini, a Kurdish woman who died in police custody on September 16.

The 22-year-old had been detained for allegedly wearing the mandatory Islamic headscarf too loosely.

In the following weeks, protests spread across Iran and have been met by a fierce crackdown, in which dozens are estimated to have been killed and hundreds arrested.

Gatherings in Iran and other countries including Turkey, Lebanon and France have seen women defiantly burning their headscarves or cutting off their hair in a stand against coercive religious dress codes.

Across the globe, women including Oscar-winning actresses Marion Cotillard and Juliette Binoche have posted videos to social media with the hashtag HairForFreedom as they too cut their hair short in support.

In Glasgow today, a sea of Iranian flags filled the air as crowds chanted “Say her name, Mahsa Amini, justice for, Mahsa Amini.”

A spokesperson for the Iranian Scottish Association said: “We organised the rally in Glasgow to stand with Iranian protesters and request the UK and Scottish governments to act in support of the Iranian protesters.

“We all have one goal of changing the theocratic regime with a democratic one and raising the awareness of the human and women's rights issues in Iran.”

Crowds later made their way towards George Square as they continued to passionately shout Mahsa Amini's name along with the words "women, life, freedom".

Following the rally, a Scottish Government Spokesperson said: “We applaud the courage and determination of women and girls, as well as the men, who are challenging police brutality and the deep-seated misogyny of laws against women and girls in Iran and condemn the Iranian government’s brutal crackdown which is resulting in the deaths of innocent civilians.

"We stand in full solidarity with everyone working to secure human rights in Iran.”
