A neighbourhood in Glasgow's Southside has been named 'one of the coolest' in the world and locals are backing it all the way.

Global media brand and culture guide Time Out recently branded Shawlands one of its 51 ‘coolest’ places in the world to visit.

Joining the likes of Ridgewood in New York (four) and Vesterbro in Copenhagen (24), Shawlands grabbed the 11th spot on the list.

Glasgow Times:

Yuriy Kachak, 39, owner of Deanston Bakery, said: "I'm not very cool myself, so I'm not the best person to judge, but it feels very nice. I'm glad that other people find the bakery cool.

"Shawlands is one of the friendliest neighbourhoods in the world. There is so much community spirit here. People really support locals just because they want them to stick around.

"Times are difficult right now, so having the support of customers is very important so in that sense, we are very lucky to be in Shawlands."

Glasgow Times:

Warren Mason, 34, a worker at Deanston Bakery, added: "To work here is a dream, and it feels very nice to be mentioned.

"There's an incrediable sense of community spirit in this area. That's its strength and it's nice to be part of that."

Time Out contributor Malcolm Jack said: “With its great parks, art, coffee and dining, Shawlands keeps Glasgow braw.

"[It] is the bustling nexus point of Glasgow below the Clyde."

And Glaswegians seem to agree that what Shawlands offers in its shopping and hospitality sectors makes it a 'cool' place to be.

Glasgow Times:

David Simister, 30, who lives in Shawlands, said: "I think Shawlands being voted as one of the coolest places in the world is actually very true.

"There's a lot of new businesses opening up, which is quite exciting and it's a dead easy area to live.

"Everything is on your doorstep and the people are friendly, the food is good and the drink is good. It's good Scottish vibes."

Glasgow Times:

Zach Browne, 27, who works in Shawlands, said: "I think Shawlands is a cool neighbourhood to work in.

"There's been a lot of changes that have been really good to see with small businesses opening up and such, but there is the other side to those changes which means it's a lot more expensive for people to live here now.

"Overall though there's a lot of positives."

Glasgow Times:

Gemma McGinlay, 27, from Shawlands, agrees with the 'positives' of the area, saying: "I've got three children and we love living here.

"There's loads to do, there's lots of shops, cafes and bars, and the parks in particular are very good.

"I would never consider moving from the area, it's just lovely."

Glasgow Times:

Reevel Alderson, 69, from Pollokshields, regular visits the area.

He said: "Shawlands is a very interesting area. It's got some very good local shops, not chain shops.

"It's also got some marvellous places to eat and drink. I don't know if it's a cool place, that's not for a 69-year-old man to say, but we come here very regularly."
