Shoppers in Tesco this weekend are encouraged to look for golden tokens, worth £10,000.

The supermarket chain is holding a special charity event between 12pm and 1pm this Saturday.

In this time period, Glasgow shoppers are given the chance to provide a local cause with a £10,000 Golden Grant, by looking for specially created gold versions of the iconic blue voting tokens, in-store.

Finders will be able to choose which of the three causes in the Argyle Street Express store’s current vote will receive the money.

There is also one ‘digital’ golden token which customers can win by nominating a charity through the Tesco Golden Grants competition, which will be running on the Tesco Twitter channel.

This marks the £100m mark in Tesco Community Grants being given to more than 50,000 good causes since the scheme was launched in 2016.

A previous winner was the North Glasgow Community Food Initiative, which used the funding to expand the capabilities in their Springburn Community Gardens.

Sineadin Ramage, Food Hub Manager at the Springburn Community Gardens said: “As a result of the Tesco grant, we have been able to expand our volunteering opportunities for the benefit of the Springburn community, as well as grow more local, organic fruit and vegetable, available to both volunteers and the wider community.

“Since we received funding, not only has participation at the growing sessions in the gardens increased but also at the community meals, with up to 40 people regularly attending. We’re grateful to everyone who nominated us at Tesco.”

Footballer Ella Toone, who partnered with Tesco for the event, said: “I’ve seen first-hand the amazing work that local groups do and how they support their communities.

"It’s more important than ever that they get the vital funding they need through projects like Tesco Community Grants, so they can continue making such a huge difference to so many people.”
