A Glasgow bus service was disrupted after an abrupt stop reportedly resulted in an elderly man ‘flying’ forward and hitting the windscreen.

The number 46 service was travelling along Shettleston Road on Tuesday afternoon when the driver was forced to hit the brakes, which caused some passengers to fall forward.

Reports on social media claimed that one man ‘flew from the back of the bus’ and that the glass of the vehicle’s front window was cracked due to the force of the fall.

A local who had heard of the incident from their mother said: “When it was just crossing over the bridge at Shettleston station, the bus came to a quick stop, and everyone went flying.

“Unfortunately, a man in his 70s must have been getting up when this happened, flew from the back of the bus right past my mum to the front and cracked all the glass nearly smashing out the front.

“Passengers were all in shock but managed to phone an ambulance, I think family members were with him trying to keep him awake.

“The driver shouted to leave using the emergency exit at the back and wait on another bus.”

First Bus confirmed the incident, stating that the driver had to brake to avoid a crash.

The firm has since launched an investigation.

A spokesperson told the Glasgow Times: “We can confirm that the number 46 Glasgow service was involved in an incident yesterday afternoon on Shettleston Road.

“The driver had to brake sharply to avoid a collision with a third-party vehicle and unfortunately, one of our passengers sustained an injury as a result.

“Our driver reacted swiftly, and emergency services were immediately called to the scene.

“The safety of our passengers remains our upmost priority and we are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident.”

The Scottish Ambulance Service and Police Scotland were contacted for comment.
