A Govan charity is "over the moon" after being shortlisted for a prestigious award.

Men's Shed Govan, a place for retired, unemployed or unfit-for-work men to have a focus and purpose again, is just one of three up for the Scottish Men's Shed of the Year Award.

The award is to recognise and reward the contribution and impact that men's sheds across Scotland are making to people's lives and the community.

Sarah Everett, 54, funding manager of Men’s Shed Govan, said: "We are totally delighted.

"We didn’t expect this at all as we are a relatively young shed. It feels amazing."

Glasgow Times:

A visit from a Scottish Men's Shed Association development officer pushed Men's Shed Govan to put their names in the hat.

Sarah said: "He came to see us and was very happy with the range of things that we have on offer.

"He asked if we had nominated ourselves for the SMSA award and we told him that we felt we were too young.

"But he told us to definitely go for it, so we filled out an application and we are now shortlisted in the top three.

"Being nominated and making the top three feels fantastic. The guys are over the moon. It feels great to be recognised."

Alongside Men's Shed Govan, Inverurie & District Men’s Shed and Lanark Men’s Shed are the other finalists.

The award comes with a trophy, a cash prize, vouchers and goodies, and Men's Shed Govan has some plans to put their possible prize money to use.

Sarah said: "We want to do more expanding on the facility, make our own solar panels, and we want to do some coffee and tea days for the elderly in the area as it's going to be really tough this winter.

"We will also have a celebratory night out because the guys deserve it, they’ve worked so hard."

Glasgow Times:

Sarah hopes that the people of Glasgow can get behind the shed, adding the award would be "good for Glasgow and good for Govan".
