Former gangster Ian 'Blink' MacDonald was cleared today of assaulting his partner.

MacDonald, 61, was on trial accused of attacking the woman, 36, at her home in Glasgow's Dalmarnock on June 25.

Court papers claimed MacDonald seized her by the hair and pulled it before striking her head with a mirror.

The charge stated that MacDonald went on to place his hands around her neck and compressed it to her injury.

Prosecutor Sean Docherty dropped the charge mid-trial after the woman gave her evidence.

Sheriff Sean Lynch acquitted MacDonald who earlier pleaded guilty to breaching a bail condition not to approach the woman.

MacDonald, of the city's Townhead, was jailed for 16 years over his role in an attempted £6million bank robbery in 1991.

He was part of a six-man gang that targeted a NatWest branch in Torquay, Devon.

A female worker survived being shot in the head during the raid.

MacDonald went on the run for several months but was arrested by undercover police in a Chinese restaurant in Glasgow.

He served 10 years of his sentence before being released in 2002.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard from the woman who stated in her evidence that she could not recall what she or MacDonald were doing on the day of the alleged assault.

The dispenser did agree with Mr Docherty that the police arrived and took MacDonald away.

Mr Docherty asked: "Why did you think they wanted to remove Mr MacDonald?"

The woman replied: "He had bail conditions not to approach the address - that's why I believed they wanted him removed."

The fiscal depute earlier took the woman to pictures which appeared to show coloured spots on her floor.

He also showed her images of a smashed mirror in the bathroom.

Mr Docherty asked how it was smashed.

She replied: "There is a cup there I think I dropped the cup on the mirror."

The woman also claimed she did not know who contacted the police.

The hearing was told that the pair attended The Sir John Moore pub in the city centre together with a three-year-old on May 30 - breaching MacDonald's bail terms.

Mr Docherty said that CCTV was used to trace the incident after the woman admitted to police during a discussion about her own bail conditions.

Laura Kiernan, defending, told the court: "He is a man of a certain age and doesn't want to be in these courts anymore and wants to put it all behind him."

MacDonald was admonished of the breach of bail charge.
