A 'delighted' figure skater will compete in a prestigious international sports competition.

Christie Shannon, 19, has been selected for the Winter World University Games next year.

After skating with the East Kilbride Ice Figure Skating Club from the age of eight, the Glasgow School of Art student has been called up for the 11-day competition, organised by the International University Sports Federation.

Glasgow Times:

The event will take place in Lake Placid, New York, from January 12 to 22, and will feature several thousand student-athletes from across the world competing in winter multi-sports.

Although this will be Christie's first time at the Winter University Games, it is something the Glasgow city centre resident has been hoping to achieve for some time and has been 'trying to work towards it' for the last few years.

Glasgow Times:

Christie said: "I'm super excited for it. Especially when I have worked so hard for this throughout my life.

"It's nice to see my work paying off and being recognised."

Glasgow Times:

The young skater will be partaking in two events at the games, the short and the free skate and her feelings towards the games are mixed.

She said: "I feel really excited but also quite nervous. It'll be a good experience though, I'm excited."

"I just want to try and skate my best."

She added: 'I have a lot of hard work ahead of me."

Glasgow Times:

Despite the excitement of the games, Christie and her mum, Shona Shannon, are conscious of the thousands of pounds in travelling costs.

Shona said: "This is her dream, and her passion, and we hope to get the money to send her and her coach there."
