A Glasgow university is offering free breakfasts to students and staff amid the cost-of-living crisis.

Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) is introducing the initiative to help their community as rising costs continue to pose challenges.

Any student or member of staff can enjoy a free hot breakfast, fruit, cup of tea or coffee from the George Moore restaurant from Monday, November 21.

Options available include baked beans or scrambled eggs on wholemeal toast and porridge with fruit compote, honey or golden syrup, and fruit.

There will be gluten-free options available on request.

GCU’s principal and vice-chancellor, Professor Pamela Gillies, said: “We know that the cost of living crisis has made this a particularly challenging time for our University community.

"This GCU initiative will provide our students and staff with the opportunity to start their day with a free, healthy, and warming breakfast.”

To redeem the offer, students simply have to collect the items from the counter and the drinks machine, then head to one of the till points.

The cashier will ring the items through the till as a zero purchase which will enable the University to monitor uptake and items ‘sold’.

The offer will be available from 8am to 11am, Monday to Friday, with an extra counter in operation to cope with increased demand.

It will initially run until the end of February 2023.
