A Glasgow school has been given special recognition for its pupils' dedication to learning essential money skills.

St Martha's Primary in the city's North has been accredited as a Centre of Excellence in Financial Education by Young Enterprise UK, in partnership with Young Enterprise Scotland and supported by HSBC UK.

In an initiative which engaged with people from the local community, financially-savvy youngsters built their knowledge and skills by handling real-life financial skills.

The project was led by Danielle Reynolds, the school’s financial champion and head teacher John O’Donnell.

Danielle said: “Taking part in the Young Enterprise Centres of Excellence programme has allowed our pupils not only to take part in high-quality Financial Education lessons but also allowed them to develop their entrepreneurial skills by taking part in a range of exciting projects.

"It has been wonderful for all staff involved to see the children's enthusiasm when learning about money management topics which will not only benefit them now but also in the future.”

John added: "There was nothing more rewarding than having our pupils express their new Financial Education knowledge and how this will make a difference in their current life and future lives.”

The second-only school in Scotland to achieve the status, it is hoped that the enthusiasm of St Martha's staff and pupils will forge a path for other schools.

Gerry Lyons, head of service at Glasgow City Council, added: “Glasgow City Council (education) is delighted that St Martha’s Primary School has attained this prestigious award for financial education.

"To be the first school in Glasgow to achieve such an accolade is testament to the drive and commitment of the staff and pupils.

"Well done to everyone for creating such a vital programme which will be invaluable to the lives of all the pupils for years to come.”
