Lewis Capaldi has responded to criticism after appearing to post his own phone number on Twitter.

The singer puzzled fans after he tweeted a number with the simple instruction of 'call me' to his 1.4 million Twitter followers on Saturday - and many were worried about being scammed.

"How real is this?" one asked, while another said: "Fake…. Someone warn the poor guy."

But Lewis reassured fans that it was a legitimate number and that calling it would send instructions on how to download his new single Pointless.

He also responded to someone who said that they 'absolutely hated' the move, commenting: "Fake social media interaction to be told to buy multiple copies/versions of a song.

"Pretty disgusting level of marketing manipulation for something that is just about money making, not music."

Lewis replied below: "I'm sorry you feel that way but genuinely I've spent more of my personal money getting this song out there over the past few days than I'll even come close to making back. I just want the song to do well x"

It comes just weeks after the Someone You Loved singer posted a photo appearing to show the same number as his own personal phone number, which led to one TikToker filming their experience calling it.

In the short clip, the call goes straight to voicemail where Lewis' voice can be heard encouraging fans to buy his new single as his record label is 'demanding' another number one from him.
