A pensioner is fighting for his life in a Glasgow hospital after being hit by a car.

The 79-year-old man was walking near Waterloo Drive at its junction with Bellefield Road in Lanark on Friday evening when the incident happened at around 7.45pm.

It involved a black Mercedes car.

He was initially rushed to Wishaw General Hospital but has since been moved to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he is described as being in a 'critical' condition.

The area was locked down for around seven hours while officers carried out investigations, and the force is continuing to probe the incident. 

They are urging people who may have witnessed the ordeal to contact them with potentially vital information. 

Sergeant Scott McCreadie of Lockerbie Road Policing said: “We are appealing to the public for information as part of our ongoing enquiry to establish the full circumstances of what happened.

“If you were in the area at the time and witnessed the incident then please get in touch.

"We are keen to speak to any drivers with dash-cam footage that could assist also.”
