Milngavie nursery tells of evacuation after burst pipe causes chaos

Lullaby Lane Nursery on Auchenhowie Road was one of the many businesses affected by the 36-inch burst pipe which impacted on around 100,000 homes in Milngavie and the city.

The burst pipe, which occurred at the junction of Auchenhowie Road and Glasgow Road, caused major flooding and huge damage to the concrete leaving many Glasgow postcodes areas including Knightswood, Partick, and Ibrox without water.

The nursery, which had to evacuate the premises, called for the emergency services after noticing that the road was "starting to come up."

Donna Adams, nursery manager at Lullaby Lane, said: "Once the emergency services arrived and assessed the area, the fire brigade thought the right thing to do was to evacuate the children.

"We had 56 children to evacuate, all under the age of five, and so, we had to think about how to move the kids physically and emotionally to ensure none of the kids were distressed.

"But we timed it right because there was an Allander coach stuck on the road, so they kindly came in and helped, and one of our families works for Murray Park, so she had told us that they had a safe space at the park for us to come down and join."

The transition from nursery to park was said to have gone smoothly and Donna praised those that stepped in to come to the nursery's aid.

She said: "Everything happened so fast, and the community really pulled together.

"Murray Park was so kind and accommodated us very well, as were the emergency services, who were really great and helped direct us on what was best to do.

"The full community, as well as our team here were amazing.

"It was all about watching the community come together and show kindness in a moment of real adversity.

"It shows how relationships really matter."

Donna added that the children showed real resilience and were "delighted" with the experience of attending Murray Park.

The nursery's water and electricity have not been affected so far today.

Earlier today, Scottish Water bosses revealed that Glasgow Road and parts of Auchenhowie Road will remain closed to ensure the safety of the staff and members of the public.

A statement read: "Due to the extent of the damage caused, it is expected that following the completion of the repair, we estimate 10-14 days for the full reinstatement and removal of traffic management and local diversions.

"However, as our reinstatement progresses we hope to be in a position to scale back on diversion routes.

"We apologise for the inconvenience and disruption that this is causing our customers."

The flooding has significantly reduced from yesterday, however, a large puddle remains under a bridge on the road.

The area surrounding a huge gaping hole in the road has been fenced off, and Scottish Water crews are currently inspecting the damage.
