Extinction Rebellion protest outside Barclays bank in Glasgow

Extinction Rebellion Scotland gathered outside Barclays this afternoon to demand the bank "end its dangerous funding of the fossil fuel industry". 

Those taking part in the demonstration started the protest outside the Barclays branch at 83 Argyle Street at 1pm.

Activists dress as Barclays executives and performed with a chained globe that become increasingly covered in oil. 

It was sat on a rug that said 'making a killing'. 

The Oil Slicks, a protest troupe, performed while dressed head to toe in black.

Protesters also held banners saying "Still funding fossil fuels".

Rachael Alexander, from Extinction Rebellion Scotland, said: "Barclays have proven that their corporate and public strategies to target climate change are little more than hot air.

"They do not care about the planet, and they do not care about us. As long as fossil fuels are still profitable, they will continue to invest despite knowing that rising sea levels will leave parts of Glasgow underwater in a matter of decades.

"No amount of empty promises and meaningless jargon will absolve them of their responsibility for such environmental destruction."

Police confirmed they were in attendance at the pre-planned protest.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Police were made aware of a pre-planned protest on Argyle Street, Glasgow on Saturday, January 28, 2023. 

"Officers are in attendance."  ​

Barclays have been approached for comment.
