Hundreds gather in Glasgow city centre for anti-racism march

The demonstration was Scotland's contribution to the United Nations' International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which is observed annually on March 21.

The event was organised by Stand Up to Racism (SUTR) in partnership with the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and was supported by several organisations including the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC), STUC Black Workers Committee, Scottish Refugee Council, Maryhill Integration Network, Muslim Engagement & Development Scotland, Scottish Council of Jewish Communities, and the Glasgow Campaign to Welcome Refugees.

The Glasgow demonstration was called under two slogans: "Justice for Sheku Bayoh" and "Refugees Welcome Here".

Ahead of the event, organisers wrote: "The ‘Rwanda plan’, racist deportations and the hostile environment for refugees and migrants are all about divide and rule and scapegoating."

Anti-racists taking part gathered in George Square from 11am, before marching through the city centre. 

A rally was then held in George Square with speakers from across the trade union and anti-racist movements, including human rights lawyer Aamer Anwar, Ruby Hirsch from Stand Up to Racism and Scottish Labour Party MSP Paul Sweeney.

Those taking part held signs with statements including "black lives matter", "smash fascism and racism", and "no one is illegal".
