The number of Scots who have been convicted of failing to pay their TV licence has been revealed.

Just two people in 12 years have been busted for dodging the fee in Scotland, reports The Scottish Sun.

Figures showed one Glasgow viewer was found to not have paid along with another in Shetland, both were fined.

A third person was also charged with withholding cash but found not guilty.

The penalty currently stands at £159 and the BBC has warned it is “highly likely” that culprits will be reported for prosecution.

The Scottish Sun reported TV bosses budgeted £100million on a four-year ad campaign.

The Scottish Sun reported that John O’Connell, chief exec of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, hit out saying: “The Beeb’s licence fee model is broken.

“Spending huge sums trying to bully households into paying simply won’t wash in the age of online streaming. Far better to scrap the TV tax altogether.”

The Department of Culture, Media and Sport's policy is for the licence fee to rise once again in 2024 following a two-year freeze.

According to reports by the Daily Telegraph, the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) is predicting that the inflation figure used will be 8.2%.

A TV Licensing spokesperson said: “The overwhelming majority of evasion cases in Scotland are dealt with by a fine imposed by a procurator fiscal.”
