One of Celtic’s greats is to be remembered at a special ceremony.

Dan McArthur signed for the Parkhead side in 1892 and was described by their first manager Willie Maley as “the first of our real star goalkeepers”.

Now the Celtic Graves Society will be paying tribute to McArthur with a commemoration at Eastern Necropolis Cemetery at the Gallowgate on Sunday, April 9 at 12.30pm.

They said: “Dan was the first truly great keeper, with an unrivalled reputation for bravery, fearlessness and athleticism.”

Born in Bargeddie, North Lanarkshire in 1867, McArthur made over 100 appearances for the Hoops and helped them to win the league both in 1895/96 and 1897/98 seasons, as well as two consecutive Scottish Cups in 1899 and 1900.

He went on to play for Clyde and also appeared for the Scotland national team.

He died in Shettleston in 1943.
