A LISTED Glasgow building has been sealed off after it was deemed to be in "dangerous condition".

The derelict Whiteinch Burgh Halls, which sits on the corner of Inchlee Street and Victoria Park Drive South, was cordoned off as a precaution.

A Glasgow City Council spokesperson confirmed: "The front stone-built dormers of this GCC building were found (by structural engineer officers from the council) to be in a dangerous condition, and so immediate action in the interests of public safety had to be taken in erecting a temporary exclusion zone on the pavement and road.

"Once the immediate works have taken place and the building made safe, the exclusion zone will be reduced.

"This is a category B listed building."

Pictures of the building with the fence around it were posted to a local Facebook community group.

This comes after the Glasgow Times reported that a campaign is underway by locals who demand action on the complex which was last used as social work premises and closed in 2002.

Councillor Eunis Jassemi, who was involved in the project, said: "It’s clear that the launch of my campaign to save the hall already has a positive impact.

"These are essential works to make the property inside safe for viewings and commercial openings.

"It was disappointing to learn that a sign plastered all over the hall had caused real concern in the community with many thinking the building was to be demolished with no notice. This was an error from the SafeDem team and I had made my feelings clear to them.

"I will speak to the council about their plans to minimise disruption to the area regarding parking and access for emergency vehicles."

People living in the adjacent tenement building have suffered from damp and mould, and fear for their safety if it is allowed to deteriorate further.
