A CELTIC star accused of getting behind the wheel while drunk allegedly told police that he did not drive.

Alexandro Bernabei, 22, is stated to have been more than twice over the limit in Glasgow city centre on August 15, 2022.

Court papers state that Bernabei, of the city's Kelvinside, was driving a Mercedes A 200 on Bath Street.

It is claimed that the Argentinian had 48 micrograms in 100 millilitres of breath when the limit is 22 micrograms.

Bernabei faces a separate charge of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner at Lola’s nightclub also on Bath Street.

It is stated that while acting in an aggressive manner, Bernabei "shouted and repeatedly refused to leave the premises despite being requested to do so".

Bernabei appeared in the dock at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday to stand trial.

However, prosecutor Gail Campbell asked for an adjournment.

She said: "An essential police witness is understood to be off sick and I have no other information regarding that.

"He is essential for a number of reasons including a language reason.

"At one point he conversed with Mr Bernabei in Spanish."

The fiscal depute also stated that two other witnesses have not been traced.

Calum Ross, defending, opposed the motion to adjourn, stating Monday's hearing was the second date set for trial.

He added: "The police witness is essential but we don't know what is specifically wrong with him.

"The language issue has been known since the Crown received statements.

"It is important as the statement confirms Mr Bernabei's position to the police officers that night.

"He said 'yes, I have alcohol, but I did not drive'.

"My client was kept in Govan police station overnight and released early the next morning.

"My client has attended throughout - he is an Argentinian national with no previous convictions."

Sheriff Amel Elfallah granted the Crown motion and the trial was adjourned to August.

She said: "The Crown should bear in mind that this patience is not infinite.

"I would be surprised if the Crown were granted another opportunity if they are not able to proceed on the next occasion."

Bernabei had his bail continued meantime.
