Alex Laurenson feared ‘he could be killed’ as he watched two dogs slaughter his family’s beloved rescue puppy Sula at Mains Estate Park in Milngavie.

“There's no doubt in my mind if I got involved, I would be dead because there was no one around to help,” he said.

Alex was taking Sula for a routine walk before dinner on February 27 when the pair were ambushed by two large dogs who were wandering the park.

He told the Glasgow Times: “They ran down to us. As soon as they did that, Sula became really anxious immediately.

“They started circling around, maybe two or three times. Sula just sat on the ground, looked at me, and put her paw up. That’s what she does when she wants help.

“She was quite a good communicator in terms of dog. And as soon as she did that, one of the dogs just went straight for her neck and just bit into it.

“It had her whole neck in its mouth. And the other dog went for the back of Sula around her leg and abdomen and they were biting her.”

Alex remembers repeatedly calling out as loud as he could, “Please come get your dogs” as he tried to get the beasts off of Sula.

He said: “They had her and they were completely pulling her apart. It was just really the most horrific, vicious attack I’ve ever seen in my life. It was just horrendous.

“This happened for about five or six minutes and it got to a point she stopped screaming. And I was like, I need to step back because I’m next. I genuinely thought nobody has come to get these dogs. There’s nobody there.

“The dogs were frenzied on Sula, shaking her about and she was completely lifeless. I went back towards the path and I phoned 999 at that point. But they were still attacking her for 15 minutes. Nobody came at any point for these dogs.”

Alex added: “I was nervous to go and see what was left after I phoned 999. I thought she would completely be ripped to bits, like roadkill. Ripped apart.

“When I saw her I just welled up and was like, ‘awe Sula’. And her tail wagged. I was like, my god she’s still alive. I ran up and I phoned the vet.

“She was in a really bad way, her eye looked like it had come out, she was covered in blood.”A spokesperson for Police Scotland confirmed they were made aware of the attack around 6pm near Hunter Road on February 27.

They added: “The dog was taken for veterinary treatment but later succumbed to its injuries.

"A 50-year-old woman has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal."

Alex and his family are still grieving their beloved family pet, who they describe as “the most loving dog.”

“When we went to the Dog’s Trust it was like she picked us. She just came up and leaned on me and as soon as she did that I just knew,” Alex says.

He added: “We’ve lost a member of our family.”

Despite Sula’s passing, vet bills for her emergency treatment cost £6,300 for which the family has not been compensated.

More needs to be done to ensure attacks like this don’t happen, and reform is needed on laws that govern the control of dogs, says Alex.
