Supermarket staff and customers were evacuated following a report of burning in the store. 

Shoppers were forced to "abandon" their shopping in Sainsbury's at the West End Retail Park after staff reported a burning plastic smell. 

An eyewitness told the Glasgow Times that customers were asked to wait outside while fire crews attended to check the store.

The fire service confirmed that they sent two engines to the supermarket and that fire crews carried out an inspection.

It was established that there was no sign of fire or smoke.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “At 2.57pm on Saturday, July 1 Operations Control mobilised two fire appliances to a commercial premises at Crow Road, Glasgow after being alerted to a reported smell of burning.

“Firefighters checked the building and established no sign of fire or smoke.

“Crews left the scene after ensuring the area was safe.”
