A Glasgow petrol station is set to get electric chargers installed in a bid to make it just “as easy” to power up with electricity as using oil-based fuel.

Planning permission is being requested to build the electric vehicle (EV) chargers at the Esso Atlas Service Station on Springburn Road.

Motor Fuel Group, which operates 900 sites in the UK, has lodged plans with Glasgow City Council to put in six charging points and make other alterations to the forecourt.

A letter submitted as part of the planning application said the company is “looking to roll out an extensive supply of electric vehicle charging facilities at existing and new service stations across the UK to diversity their existing offer, with the aspiration to make it as easy to charge your vehicle as re-fuelling with petrol or diesel.

"The aspiration of Motor Fuel Group is to provide access to convenient and affordable charging, regardless of where the driver lives.”

The proposals would involve a car wash, plant room and jet wash machine demolished. The plans would also see six electric vehicle charging points provided as well as canopy, substation enclosure, three jet wash bays and forecourt work.

The letter added: “Motor Fuel Group’s proposal to install new EV charging points at Atlas Service Station should be considered positively in light of the national context and the demand for the necessary infrastructure to support electric vehicle use across the UK.

"The proposals would contribute positively to the existing EV charging network, to the benefit of those utilising the strategic highway network surrounding the application site.”

It added: “The proposals will enhance the existing offer at the service station without compromising the efficient operation of the facility.”

Glasgow City Council is to consider the planning application.

The target date for a decision is August 22.
