A kind-hearted lollipop man who illuminates his home every year for Christmas has raised over £100,000 for charity.

Alistair Doyle, 79, has lived and worked in Coatbridge since he was 15 and he has become a familiar face in the community.

Friends and neighbours flock to his Kirkwood home to visit his incredible lights display, which he has organised every year since 2006 with money from his own pocket.

Glasgow Times:

Alistair said: "During the month of December I use almost six month’s worth of electricity which I fund myself.

"Every penny which is raised goes to charity."

By collecting donations from visitors, businesses, schools and more, the generous pensioner has raised a whopping £118,600 for Ronald McDonald House Glasgow.

Glasgow Times:

The charity supports families by providing them with free accommodation while their child is a patient at the Royal Hospital for Children.

Fundraising manager Lyndsay Anderson said: “On behalf of the many hundreds of families from all across Scotland that benefit from staying here while their child is ill, we would like to thank Alistair, his family and neighbours and the many, many people who helped raise this amazing total.

“This support helps families stay together at their most difficult time.

“The charity relies solely on donations and fundraising initiatives like Alistair’s Christmas lights display to keep the doors of the House open each year.”
