Two young students are trapped on their Gran Canaria holiday without vital medication.

David Butler and Cerys Hoy, both 21, are stuck abroad after a technical fault in the UK's air traffic control (ATC) system on Monday left thousands of passengers stranded and flights delayed or scrapped.

The pair of pals, from Bishopbriggs, were due to return on Monday, August 28, but after their flight was cancelled they were told it would be at least a week before they could fly again.

They then felt abandoned by RyanAir, which left them to sort out their own accommodation and plans, which could see them £1000 out of pocket.

David has also been left without his crucial medicine as he has now run out of antidepressants leaving him fearing for his health.

He told the Glasgow Times: “While stranded in the airport we were offered no food vouchers and the general atmosphere was panic, anger and confusion.

“I also take daily medication for which I have run out and cannot access for another week, this could risk my health.

“As young tourists, being stranded in the streets of Gran Canaria in the middle of the night, trying to get into a hotel made us feel very intimidated and uncomfortable.

“We have no money to stay in Gran Canaria for another week and we are trying to get in touch with family for financial assistance.

“This has definitely put the pair of us off travelling in the future, especially with RyanAir, as we have been shown the vulnerable positions passengers can be left in difficult circumstances.”

David and Cerys claim they were about to board the flight in Gran Canaria before being turned away at the last second because the cabin crew were “too tired”.

The pair were then “left on the street” without money, as they are young students who had to ask family for help.

David said: “Halfway through boarding the priority passengers we heard murmurs from people that the flight was now cancelled.

“This was confirmed by airport staff with the explanation that the staff were ‘too tired and exhausted’ from the delayed schedule.

“While initially this could have been seen as understandable, we were then outraged when the plane pulled away and began flying back to Edinburgh empty while leaving us all with nothing.

“RyanAir were also attempting to charge us online up to £40 to choose seats together on our rescheduled flight, a fee we had already paid for our seats on the cancelled flight.”
