North Lanarkshire Council has written off almost £180,000 in debt it is owed for health and social services as unrecoverable.

The money, owed to services such as home care, nursing and residential homes, community alarms and charges to other institutions, has been deemed uncollectable.

The main reasons for this are that the debtor is deceased with insufficient funds to pay the sum due, small amounts are owed which are not economic to pursue, the debtor has moved away and cannot be located, or all available  means of recovery have been exhausted.

There were 38 cases of the debt being written off due to death owing, while the largest category of debt was where recovery had been exhausted (£122,000).

A total of 62 cases involved sums of less than £500 with 27 exceeding this value.

The council’s adult health and social care services sent out invoices totalling £64 million during the financial year 2022/2023, with £63 million of this being charged to other local authorities, health boards and universities.
