All Glasgow schools and nurseries will shut on three strike days later this month.

Glasgow City Council has announced that due to industrial action by school staff over pay, the establishments will be closed on September 26, 27, 28.

Douglas Hutchison, Executive Director of Education, has written to parents and carers today to inform them.

In a letter, he said: "The strike will involve many of our Education Services staff and will include support for learning workers, escorts, administration staff, catering, janitorial, cleaning services and school crossing patrollers.

"It is therefore not possible to secure a safe environment and provide lunches for our young people or maintain continuity of learning.

"I hope you understand our position and why we have to close our provision over the three days of the planned industrial action, and we will post any updates on the council’s communication channels ahead of the dates.

"We will continue to work on alternative arrangements right up to the date of the strikes but at this stage, it is very likely we will be unable to make provision for schools and nurseries, therefore they will be closed to pupils. If there is any change based on individual risk assessments and suitable catering arrangements being available, I will contact individual schools."

The letter has been issued by schools to families to give them as much notice as possible to make alternative arrangements for the three days of action.

This comes after the Glasgow Times reported yesterday that UNISON Scotland rejected an offer from COSLA that represented an increase on the previous offer of only 0.17%.

Johanna Baxter, UNISON Scotland head of local government, said: “It is deeply disappointing that it has taken COSLA five months since our members rejected the initial offer to present such insignificant changes.

“Going on strike is always a last resort – our members want to be in schools supporting children not on picket lines outside them.

“But they have been left with no option."

Twenty-four local authorities are affected including Glasgow, West Dunbartonshire, East Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire, Renfrewshire, and South Lanarkshire.
