Shocking images show the devastation a fire has caused to a former nursery in Glasgow's East End.

Firefighters raced to St Michael's Lane near the Gallowgate last night at around 10pm and remain there this morning.

Images taken at the scene today show that the building has been destroyed by the blaze.

Multiple appliances and police vehicles were stationed in the school playground on Wednesday morning and the fire is still being extinguished.

It is understood that the neighbouring school, St Michael's Primary, is unaffected by the fire and is still open today.

The windows will remain closed today at neighbouring St Michael's Primary as a precaution, a Glasgow City Council spokesperson said.

A spokesperson said: "Due to the smoke from an ongoing fire in a building to the rear of St Michael's Lane near Springfield Gardens, Gallowgate, residents in nearby streets are advised to keep their windows closed until further notice."

The force also confirmed that they were carrying out investigations to work out the cause of the blaze.
