A new series of calligraphy workshops is launching in Glasgow aimed at promoting a sense of relaxation through connecting pen with page.

Hosted by Christina Lessani of Laila Lettering, calligraphy is reframed as "an immersive sensory experience" and sessions involve breathwork to go along with practice strokes.

I've never been much of an artist, but as a child I used to spend long hours with font books, practising different bubble letters and quirky alphabets.

Glasgow Times:

Armed with a dip pen and a workbook filled with swirly letters, it was like being transported back to my primary school desk.

Christina is a charismatic host, emphasizing the importance of drawing slowly and resisting the urge to compare what you are doing with your neighbour.

The self-taught calligrapher from Cambuslang fell in love with the practice when she set out to illustrate her own wedding invitations in 2016.

She has since gone on to work for big names like Chanel, Ferrari, Vieve, and MTV.

Christina said: “There is something incredibly mindful and relaxing about simply learning to write.

"Engaging in calligraphy requires focus, attention and concentration on each stroke and letter and this mindfulness can really help to redirect your thoughts away from anxious or intrusive thinking, which then in turn helps to promote relaxation and reduce stress."

Practising calligraphy strokes to candlelight is soothing but the urge to skip ahead and start writing out my name keeps taking over.

Not one to relax often, slowing down and focusing on my breathing is also a struggle (overthinking about breathing is never calming).

Glasgow Times:

Though the mindfulness aspect of the workshop was lost on me, the art of drawing letters reignited my love of longhand.

With Christmas coming up, I'm looking forward to showing off my novice attempts at cursive on some good old-fashioned cards.

Laila Lettering workshops will begin at the end of October. Sessions are 2.5 hours and cost £75 (includes a drink, canapes, workbook, ink, nibs, pen, and tote bag).

Glasgow Times:

Taking place at House of Naf and Banca Di Roma, anyone interested is encouraged to keep an eye on Laila Lettering's social channels for a chance to grab a spot.
