Glasgow City Council received almost 100 calls in one day from residents affected by floods in the city.

Amber weather warnings were in place across the country over the weekend, with Glasgow experiencing particularly bad flooding on Saturday.

Footage and images circulated of roads being submerged, locals wading through knee-deep water levels and cars abandoned.

And council bosses have revealed that their teams worked 'around the clock' to clear 91 reports of incidents across the city.

A spokesperson said: “Almost half the expected rainfall for October fell on Glasgow during the amber weather warning over the weekend.

“With such a high volume of rainfall in a short period of time, flooding incidents are always highly likely in places across the city.

“The severe intensity and extended duration of the rainfall simply overwhelmed the road drainage system at many locations

“SEPA flood warnings were in place for the White Cart Water and services were primed to respond to the anticipated disruption.

“On Saturday we received 91 reports of flooding across the city and our teams worked round the clock in difficult conditions to get all of these incidents cleared as quickly as possible.

“This work included clearing fallen leaves at scores of locations to help keep drains clear, although due to the volume of leaf fall, blockages can develop quickly at any time.

“Our rolling gully programme cleans and empties all of the city’s gullies based on neighbourhood routes, arterial routes and flood routes. “

Glasgow is expected to face yet more disruption due to the weather, with a yellow warning for rain in place today (October 10) until 9pm.

We could expect difficult driving conditions and some road closures due to spray and flooding, as well as delays or cancellations to train and bus services again.

There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings.
